Week 2: Jewish Biblical Theology
Well, the discussion was a bit diffuse today, wasn't it?
In part, I think, this shows the value of having specific (biblical) texts to illustrate the problems under discussion. Otherwise, as today, we are left with generalities and the potential of talking past each other.
Our problem is compounded by the way the literature tends to treat these issues, that is, apart from discussion of specific texts too. A notable exception to this is the debate between Jon Levenson (“Exodus and Liberation”, Horizons in Biblical Theology 13 [1991] = ch. 6 of The Hebrew Bible, the Old Testament, and Historical Criticism; + rejoinder to Collins in Biblical Theology Bulletin 26 [1996], 4-10) and John Collins (“The Exodus and Biblical Theology”, Biblical Theology Bulletin 25 [1995], 152-160) over the theological shape of the Exodus story.
In succeeding weeks, we must attempt to anchor our discussion in biblical texts!
OTOH, it seems that the readings were clear and well understood, as there was little call for clarification. If there is some issue that you think could have benefitted from clarification (or at least “discussion!”), do make a note of it in the comment thread to this entry.
